Watercolor nature cards

Spring and summer are vibrant seasons when nature awakens, and bird songs fill the air. It’s the perfect time to embark on outdoor adventures with your kids and explore the fascinating world of egg birds.

Nest watching, studying bird eggs found on the ground, recognizing different bird species, and listening to their melodious songs can be both educational and enjoyable for children. In this blog post, we’ll explore this delightful activity and provide a free watercolor template featuring various egg birds that your kids can paint and personalize.

Activities ideas for walks

  1. Nest Watching:
Nest watching is a captivating activity that allows children to observe birds’ behavior up close. Take leisurely walks in parks, nature reserves, or even your own backyard, keeping an eye out for bird nests in trees, shrubs, or on the ground. Encourage your kids to identify different nest types, note the materials used, and discuss why birds choose particular locations. Remind them to maintain a respectful distance and avoid disturbing the nests.
  2. Studying Birds’ Eggs:
While exploring, you may stumble upon fallen bird eggs. Take this opportunity to teach your children about the diverse array of bird eggs and their unique characteristics. Examine the size, shape, color, and patterns of the eggs together. Discuss how eggs vary from species to species and the reasons behind these differences, such as camouflage or temperature regulation. Ensure that any eggs found are abandoned before handling them.
  3. Recognizing Bird Species:
Enhance your kids’ bird identification skills by familiarizing them with the distinct features and behaviors of common bird species in your area. Use field guides, smartphone apps, or online resources to identify birds you encounter during your walks. Pay attention to their coloration, beak shapes, flight patterns, and sounds they make. Engage in fun activities like “I Spy” or creating a checklist of birds to spot during each outing.
  4. Appreciating Bird Songs:
The melodious tunes of birds can be a source of joy and inspiration. Teach your children to recognize different bird songs and calls. Listen attentively during your walks, encouraging them to identify and mimic the sounds they hear. You can find audio recordings of bird songs online to aid in the learning process. Or use “bird net” app recognition bird songs.
  5. Help your kids understand that each species has its unique song, used for communication, territorial defense, and attracting mates.
  6. Free Watercolor Template:
To further engage your children’s creativity, I’ve prepared a free watercolor template featuring different egg birds. Download and print the template, and invite your kids to paint and personalize the eggs in their own unique style. This activity allows them to explore colors, patterns, and express their imagination while connecting with the beauty of nature.
